Matthias Planitzer is a visual artist, programmer, and physician based in Berlin. He passed his medical state examination at the Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin in 2015 and from 2013 to 2016 worked as a research assistant on the project “Image Guidance” at the Cluster of Excellence “Bild Wissen Gestaltung,” an interdisciplinary laboratory at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He subsequently studied fine arts in the class of Prof. Hito Steyerl (Lensbased Class) at the Universität der Künste Berlin, graduating with a Meisterschüler degree in 2023. His artistic practice focuses on the conditions and interdependencies of technological processes, searching for connections between knowledge production and technical claims to absoluteness, between opaque surfaces and inconspicuous structures, between trace and artefact. He works primarily with film, photography, algorithmic, and generative means, repeatedly appropriating imaging methods and taking them to extremes. Selected exhibitions include “Poetics of Encryption” at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2024) and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2024); “GOGBOT x RMT” at Rijksmuseum Twenthe (2024–2025); “Seen By #18” at Museum für Fotografie, Berlin (2022); “Hybrid Biennale” at Festspielhaus Hellerau, Dresden (2022); and “Conditions of a Necessity” at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2020). Co-editor of the book series Uncanny Issues (Textem Verlag). UdK Berlin Art Award (2024). Homepage: matthiasplanitzer.de
