Savaş Boyraz (b. 1980, Istanbul) is a photographer, filmmaker, and artistic researcher based in Stockholm. He holds a BFA from the Photography Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul, an MFA in Art in the Public Realm from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm, and is currently a PhD candidate in Artistic Research at the Stockholm University of the Arts. From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of the Mezopotamya Cinema Collective in Istanbul. His practice, which he describes as “image-based activism,” works at the intersection of photography and film, tracing the architectural and landscape traces of state violence, military gentrification, and Kurdish cultural heritage. His early series Ben u Sen (Me and You), documenting people in southeastern Anatolia, was featured in the exhibition reGeneration2 at the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, and published by Thames & Hudson (2010), travelling to the Aperture Foundation New York, Les Rencontres d’Arles, and Galleria Carla Sozzani, Milan. His multidimensional installation The State We Are In (2018–19), unfolding from reflections on Picasso’s Guernica to explore state violence across territorial and temporal borders, was shown at Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, TRANZIT Ljubljana, YapıKredi Istanbul, and the Forum de l’Hôtel de Ville, Lausanne. His project Zozan: Tracing Traces with Empty Hands was exhibited at MARKK Hamburg (2023–24). He has received the Victor Fellowship from the Hasselblad Foundation (2013) and residencies at ISCP New York, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, and the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht.
